In response to the continuous rainfall in the upper catchment areas and the resulting heavy inflow into the Chenab River, the gates of Salal Dam in Reasi were reopened on Tuesday as a precautionary measure.

Ashiq Hussain, an official from the control room, confirmed that residents of both upstream and downstream villages were promptly alerted about the rising water levels and advised to stay away from the riverbanks.

“NHPC has informed all the villagers in upstream and downstream areas. People have been strictly instructed not to venture near the riverbanks as water levels continue to rise,” Hussain told ANI.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah visited Ramban town earlier in the day to assess the damage caused by recent floods and landslides.

Heavy rainfall on April 20 triggered landslides and flash floods in Ramban district, causing extensive damage and blocking the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. Tragically, three people, including two children, lost their lives in Bagahana village after a landslide led to the collapse of two houses.

During his visit, CM Abdullah assured the public that restoration efforts are ongoing, with the goal of reopening one side of the highway within 24 hours. He emphasized that saving lives and delivering relief materials remain the top priorities.

“This is the third day, and senior ministers have been present on the ground daily. Yesterday, I inspected the affected areas on foot. Restoration work is moving swiftly. Our first priority was evacuating people to safety, which has been accomplished. Now, efforts are focused on reconnecting roads,” the Chief Minister said.

He added that after restoring road connectivity, a full assessment of damages will be conducted, and compensation will be provided according to SDRF and NDRF guidelines. “We are confident of receiving all necessary assistance from the Centre,” he said.
