On Wednesday, fresh snow fell in the higher parts of the Kashmir Valley, including the tourist destinations of Gulmarg and Sonmarg, while heavy rains lashed the plains, including Srinagar.
According to the Meteorological Centre Srinagar, snow was falling at Sonmarg, Gulmarg, and other higher elevations of the Kashmir valley at the time of writing. Light rain was falling in the plains of North and Central Kashmir, while overcast and fog prevailed in the plains of Jammu.
The MeT forecast indicates that snow and rain will gradually intensify and spread during the day, with the most of activity occurring in the evening and at night. Some locations, mainly upper altitudes, could experience significant snowfall.
The MeT office has also issued a warning that the weather could impact surface traffic from January 11 to 12, particularly over higher ranges.
Jammu and Kashmir’s summer capital, Srinagar, experienced a low of 3.5 degrees Celsius, compared to 1.8 degrees Celsius the night before. During this time of the season, it was 5.6 degrees warmer than average. Up to 8:30 a.m. today, Srinagar also received 0.3 millimetres of rain in the previous 24 hours. Wednesday’s regular activities were disrupted by rain, low visibility, cold, and fog in Srinagar.
In contrast to the previous night’s low of minus 4.4 degrees Celsius, Gulmarg in north Kashmir experienced a low of minus 3.0 degrees on Wednesday. It was 4.9 degrees Celsius warmer than usual for the meadow valley. 6.6 cm of snow and 6.0 mm of rain fell in Gulmarg during the 24 hours leading up to 8:30 a.m. today. At Kashmir, a well-known ski resort, it was still snowing.
Pahalgam, a popular tourist destination in south Kashmir, experienced a low of minus 0.3 degrees Celsius compared to minus 3.2 degrees Celsius the day before. In the valley of shepherds, the temperature was 6.8 degrees higher than usual for this time of year. Additionally, it received 1.1mm of rain from yesterday at 07:30 AM to today at 08:30 AM.
Near contrast to the previous night’s low of minus 3.6 degrees Celsius, Kokernag reported a low of 0.7 degrees Celsius on Wednesday in Qazigund on the Srinagar-Jammu national route.
Kupwara, a district in the border region of Kashmir, recorded a low temperature of 1.5 degrees Celsius, down from 2.9 degrees Celsius the night before. During this time of the season, it was 4.4 degrees warmer than average. The MeT office reported that it also received 3.6mm of rain over the previous 24 hours until 08:30 today.
