The Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) Chief Ministerial candidate Lalduhoma has achieved a resounding triumph in the Serchhip Assembly constituency of Mizoram, as confirmed by the Election Commission of India in the release of results for 25 seats from the November 7 polls in the state.
Lalduhoma’s journey from being an IPS officer to a political leader is nothing short of extraordinary. Initially serving in the Indian Police Service (IPS) in Goa, he later became responsible for the security of the then Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, in the national capital.
After his service, Lalduhoma established the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), which has now become a significant player in Mizoram’s political arena. In 1984, Lalduhoma entered the Lok Sabha, but his political career faced a major setback when he became the first Member of Parliament to be disqualified under the anti-defection law.
In 2020, Lalduhoma faced disqualification as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for violating the anti-defection law. However, he made a remarkable comeback by winning the by-election for the Serchhip seat in 2021.
The Zoram People’s Movement was formed as a coalition of six regional parties: Mizoram People’s Conference, Zoram Nationalist Party, Zoram Exodus Movement, Zoram Decentralisation Front, Zoram Reformation Front, and Mizoram People’s Party.
These parties later amalgamated into a unified entity, officially forming the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) in 2018.
Zoram People’s Movement leader and the party’s Chief Ministerial candidate Lalduhoma said the ZPM will not join the BJP-led NDA or the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc if it comes to power in Mizoram in the coming Assembly polls.
