The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully tested both the maximum and minimum range capabilities of the ‘Pralay’ missile system during a two-day trial in Odisha, an official said on Tuesday.
The User Evaluation Trials of ‘Pralay’—an indigenous, solid-propellant, quasi-ballistic missile equipped with advanced guidance and navigation systems—were conducted from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the Odisha coast on Monday and Tuesday, the official added.
During the trials, the missiles accurately followed their intended trajectory and hit the target with precision, successfully meeting all test objectives, the Defence Ministry said in a statement.
All subsystems functioned as expected, and performance was confirmed using test data captured by various tracking sensors deployed by the Integrated Test Range (ITR), including instruments placed on a ship positioned near the designated impact point, the statement added.
The missile is capable of carrying multiple types of warheads and can be used against a variety of targets. It has been developed by the Research Centre Imarat in collaboration with several DRDO laboratories, including the Defence Research and Development Laboratory, Advanced Systems Laboratory, Armament Research and Development Establishment, High Energy Materials Research Laboratory, Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory, Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory, Research and Development Establishment (Engineers), and ITR. Industry partners such as Bharat Dynamics Limited, Bharat Electronics Limited, along with many other industries and MSMEs, also contributed to the development.
The flight tests, conducted over two days, were witnessed by senior DRDO scientists, representatives from the Indian Air Force and Indian Army, as well as members from the defence industry.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the DRDO, the Armed Forces, and industry partners on the successful trials. He stated that the missile, equipped with modern technologies, would significantly enhance the Armed Forces’ capabilities in addressing emerging threats.
Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and DRDO Chairman, Dr. Samir V. Kamat, also extended his congratulations, noting that the successful completion of Phase-1 flight trials paves the way for the missile’s induction into the Armed Forces in the near future. (Agencies)
