A cloudburst in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district on Tuesday triggered flash floods, leaving more than 10 houses damaged, officials said.
The incident occurred even as the weather department issued a warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall across several districts of the Jammu region, including Kathua, Samba, Doda, Jammu, Ramban, and Kishtwar. Authorities confirmed that no casualties have been reported so far.
All government and private schools across the Jammu division remained closed on Tuesday due to inclement weather conditions. The River Tawi was in spate, while water levels in several rivers and streams had already crossed the danger mark. Officials warned of a further and significant rise in water levels through the night.
“There is a flood alert across the Jammu region, and people have been advised to keep away from rivers, streams, and landslide-prone areas,” a senior official said.
In Kashmir, moderate to heavy rain lashed the southern districts, with intense downpours reported over the higher reaches. While no flood alert was issued for the Jhelum river, authorities said water levels were expected to rise. Central Kashmir experienced light to moderate showers, whereas north Kashmir saw only light rain or largely dry weather.
According to the meteorological department, Kathua district recorded the heaviest rainfall in the region with 155.6 mm in the past 24 hours ending at 8:30 a.m. Monday. It was followed by Bhaderwah in Doda with 99.8 mm, Jammu with 81.5 mm, and Katra with 68.8 mm of rainfall.
Authorities have warned of potential cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides in high-altitude areas until at least August 27. Rescue and relief teams have been put on alert in vulnerable locations, officials said.
