The police identified the accused as Gangaraju (left) and the deceased as his wife Bhagya, 36, daughter Navya, 19 (right) and niece Hemavathi, 23.

A 42-year-old Home Guard in Bengaluru allegedly murdered three of his family members, alerted the police via a helpline number, walked to the local police station with a machete, and then surrendered himself on Wednesday evening.

The police identified the accused as Gangaraju, a resident of Chokkasandra near Jalahalli Cross in north Bengaluru, and the deceased as his wife Bhagya, 36, daughter Navya, 19, and niece Hemavathi, 23. Gangaraju, who was posted at Hebbagodi police station, was arrested on murder charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

A native of Nelamangala, Ganagaraju stayed in a rented house in Bengaluru. The incident came to light around 4 pm when he called the police emergency helpline number 112 and said he had killed three of his family members. Police patrol vehicles in the area were alerted and when the police rushed to Gangaraju’s residence, they found three bodies lying in a pool of blood but he was missing.

By then, Gangaraju had walked to the Peenya police station with a machete, the alleged murder weapon, and confessed to killing his family members, the police said.

A police officer said that Gangaraju suspected that his wife was having an affair and the couple frequently fought over this. On Wednesday, when a fight broke out over the topic, Gangaraju allegedly tried to attack Bhagya. Navya and Hemavathi supported Bhagya and this angered Gangaraju, who killed all three with the machete, the police said.
