Asked to remove shoes outside ICU, Lucknow mayor calls bulldozer at hospital

A hospital in Lucknow witnessed a ruckus when city mayor Sushma Kharakwal was asked by the doctors to remove her shoes during a visit to the facility. The request turned into a heated altercation between the mayor and the hospital administration.

The mayor visited the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the hospital on Monday when the incident occurred.

Later, posters were put up outside the hospital premises and a bulldozer was brought. However, the situation eased after the police reached the spot.

Suren Kumar, a retired soldier from the Army brigade of the municipal corporation, was being treated at the ICU of Vinayak Medicare, a private hospital located in Thana Bijnaur in Lucknow.

The hospital administration said the mayor and her colleagues attempted to enter the ICU wearing shoes, which they obstructed.

However, hospital director Mudrika Singh termed the reports of an argument between the staff and the city mayor ‘false’.

Talking to reporters, the hospital director said the mayor had visited the hospital and interacted with the doctors. “There was no altercation between them,” Singh said.

“Media and social platforms are circulating misleading news regarding the meeting between the mayor and the doctors. These claims are completely unfounded and should not be propagated,” Singh added.
