Chennai: A man with three wives, conviction in six criminal cases, facing another 14 criminal cases and video recordings of five more women this is the crime profile of repeat offender Gnanasekaran, who was arrested on Wednesday on charges of raping a second-year engineering student on the Anna University campus.
Since one of his wives is a sanitation employee on contract at the university, he knew the topography of the campus and entered it at will.
Police on Thursday explained how they zeroed in on him.The Kotturpuram police, soon after registering a case on Dec 24, detained at least 50 suspects, including Gnanasekaran.
However, after questioning, all of them, including the suspect, were released after they submitted an undertaking.
However, based on some CCTV camera footage from the campus, Gnanasekaran was arrested the next day.An examination of his mobile phone revealed that there were at least five videos of different women.
It has now been sent to a cybercrime laboratory for analysis.All the cases against Gnanasekaran relate to robbery, burglary, and theft inKotturpuram and other city police stations.
Police commissioner A Arun said, âwe need to interrogate Gnanasekaran in custody and question him further. We didnât receive any specific complaints against Gnanasekaran earlier.
âHe, however, refused to divulge more information on the issue.There are 70 CCTV cameras inside and outside the Anna University campus. Of them, only 56 are functional now.
University officials have now deployed 140 ex-servicemen to maintain surveillance on the campus to ensure the safety of the students.(The victim’s identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
