Chennai, October 8: A Hyundai Exter plunged into a nearly 10-foot-deep sinkhole on Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) near Tidel Park in Chennai on Thursday morning, triggering major traffic disruptions along the busy IT corridor.

The incident reportedly occurred close to an underground metro construction site, where the vehicle’s front tyre became trapped before the car toppled into the large cavity. Emergency teams and traffic police responded to the spot, while diversions were put in place to manage congestion.

Metro construction workers began filling the sinkhole as authorities investigated the cause of the road collapse. The incident has also raised fresh concerns over road safety and construction-related risks in the area.

The latest incident is particularly significant as a similar sinkhole-related accident was reported on the same stretch on May 18, 2025, when another car plunged into a road cavity.

With OMR serving as one of Chennai’s major IT and commuter routes, the incident has renewed calls for stronger safety checks, proper monitoring of infrastructure projects and greater accountability from contractors involved in major construction works.
