Anant Ambani has been appointed Professor of Practice in Sustainability at Newcastle University in the UK, with the university recognising his work in conservation, biodiversity protection, animal welfare and the transition towards cleaner energy. The appointment was announced by Newcastle University in September 2026.
In the role, Ambani is expected to bring his practical experience in sustainability, green-energy transition and wildlife conservation into the academic environment and engage with students on issues related to building a more sustainable future. Newcastle University said his work includes contributions to conservation and biodiversity through Vantara, a wildlife rescue and conservation initiative in Gujarat, as well as involvement in Reliance Industries’ clean-energy transition.
The university has also highlighted areas such as solar manufacturing, green hydrogen, carbon capture, clean fuels and other next-generation energy technologies as part of the broader energy-transition work associated with Ambani’s professional role.
The appointment has also generated public debate, with some academics and conservationists questioning the decision and raising concerns about Ambani’s links to Reliance Industries and Vantara. Newcastle University has defended the appointment, saying it recognises his practical contributions to conservation, biodiversity, animal welfare and environmental stewardship.
During his lecture at the university, Ambani spoke about the importance of conservation and sustainability, while the university said the role would strengthen its focus on sustainability, clean energy and biodiversity.
