The Jammu and Kashmir Government is considering a phased plan to upgrade selected High Schools, particularly in rural and far-flung areas, into K-12 composite schools to improve access to senior secondary education.
The proposal involves schools currently offering education from Classes 1 to 10, with the aim of extending education up to Classes 11 and 12 at the same institution. The move is intended to provide greater continuity for students and reduce the need to travel elsewhere after Class 10, especially in underserved and geographically remote areas.
However, the government has clarified that there is no immediate proposal to upgrade Primary Schools into Middle Schools or Middle Schools into High Schools. Such demands will be examined and considered in a phased manner, subject to budgetary availability and prescribed norms.
The development comes amid a broader government roadmap to strengthen senior secondary education in J&K. In August, the government reviewed a plan for the phased upgradation of 714 High Schools into K-12 composite schools, with attention to infrastructure, laboratories and teaching and non-teaching staff.
