New Delhi, Feb 16: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday said that once the three new criminal laws are fully implemented across the country in the coming years, the conviction rate in criminal cases is expected to rise to 80 per cent.

Addressing the 79th Raising Day Parade of the Delhi Police, Shah said the new justice-oriented laws mark a major milestone achieved over the past 11 years and will significantly improve case disposal and conviction rates.

He was referring to the three new criminal laws — the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) — which replaced the IPC, CrPC and the Indian Evidence Act on July 1, 2024.

The Home Minister also asserted that the fight against Maoist violence is in its final phase and expressed confidence that the threat would be eliminated by March this year.

During the event, Shah launched several new initiatives of the Delhi Police, including an integrated headquarters for the Special Cell and the first phase of the Safe City project.

He said that under the project’s first phase, 2,100 of the proposed 10,000 AI-enabled CCTV cameras have been connected to the surveillance network, along with the integration of 15,000 existing CCTV cameras.

Praising the Delhi Police, Shah said the force has effectively handled the complex challenges of safeguarding the national capital, which he described as the heartbeat of the country’s democracy and a symbol of its honour and identity. (Agencies)
