Jammu/ New Delhi, January 27, 2026:
Hon’ble MLA Kishtwar, Shagun Parihar, today met Union Minister of Law and Justice, Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal, in New Delhi and submitted a detailed memorandum seeking the establishment of a National Law University (NLU) in Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir.
During the meeting, Shagun Parihar apprised the Union Minister about the long-pending demand of the people of Chenab Valley for higher professional educational institutions and highlighted Kishtwar’s strategic location, peaceful academic environment and growing aspirations of local youth. She emphasized that setting up a National Law University in Kishtwar would prove to be a transformative step for the region by providing quality legal education, generating employment opportunities and boosting overall socio-economic development.
The MLA pointed out that students from remote and hilly areas of Kishtwar, Doda and Ramban are compelled to migrate to far-off states for legal studies, placing a heavy financial burden on families. Establishment of an NLU in Kishtwar would not only address this gap but also strengthen access to justice, legal awareness and research in Jammu and Kashmir.
Shagun Parihar further stated that Kishtwar offers adequate land availability, connectivity and a conducive atmosphere for an institution of national importance. She requested the Union Minister to consider the proposal on priority and initiate necessary steps in coordination with the concerned departments.
Union Minister Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal gave a patient hearing to the issues raised and assured the MLA that the memorandum would be examined sympathetically and taken up with the appropriate authorities.
Speaking after the meeting, Shagun Parihar expressed hope that the Central Government would respond positively to the genuine aspirations of the people of Kishtwar and Chenab Valley, adding that she remains committed to bringing higher education and development projects to the region.
