North Kashmir has taken a meaningful step toward promoting fitness and inclusive recreation with the inauguration of its first Pickleball courts at SSM College, Parihaspora, in Baramulla district.
The facility was formally inaugurated by Nuzhat Gul, Secretary of the Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council, and was developed in collaboration with World Health Sports (WHS), co-founded by Viraj Singh. The initiative marks a growing momentum in grassroots sports infrastructure development across the Valley.
Speaking at the launch event, Nuzhat Gul told the media, “Pickleball is not just a sport—it’s a platform for promoting healthy lifestyles, fostering community engagement, and offering stress relief. We are proud to introduce this opportunity in Baramulla and aim to expand such initiatives across the region.”
Pickleball, a rapidly growing racquet sport that blends elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, is being embraced as an inclusive activity suitable for all age groups—from schoolchildren to senior citizens.
Highlighting the significance of the initiative, Haya Qazi, Administrator of SSM College, said, “We’re proud to host North Kashmir’s first Pickleball courts. This facility encourages a culture of fitness and teamwork among our students and the wider community.”
Viraj Singh, Co-founder of WHS and a key collaborator in the project, added, “Our goal is to introduce innovative sports that support both physical and mental well-being, especially in regions where such resources are limited.”
Participants in the inaugural matches shared enthusiastic responses. Sahiba, a student, described Pickleball as “a fun, healthy way to stay fit and beat stress.” Local player Manzoor Ahmad echoed her thoughts, saying, “This is a refreshing change. Sports like this can really help keep the youth focused and away from harmful distractions.”
With increasing concern over substance abuse among youth in the region, the need for positive recreational outlets has become more urgent. Facilities like these Pickleball courts are being viewed as vital tools to encourage healthy lifestyle choices and constructive engagement.
The launch represents a broader vision of the Jammu & Kashmir administration and local institutions to enhance community well-being through inclusive sports and fitness-driven initiatives. (Agencies)
