At the tender age of five, Teghbir Singh has achieved the remarkable feat of becoming the youngest ever in Asia to scale Mt Kilimanjaro.
Mt Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa, is located in Tanzania and stands tall at 19340 ft (5895 m).
Hailing from Ropar, Teghbir started his trek to Mt Kilimanjaro on August 18 and reached Uhuru peak, the highest point of the mountain on August 23, 2024. In April this year, Teghbir had trekked to the base camp of Mt Everest.
Conquering challenges of altitude sickness, he finally reached the summit, where the temperature was minus 10 degrees Celsius and fulfilled his dream.
Teghbir had received a Mountain Climbing Certificate from the Conservation Commissioner of Tanzania National Parks, including Kilimanjaro National Park.
Talking over phone, the class I student of Shiwalik Public School in Ropar said that he kept chanting Waheguru and it helped him scale the peak
He shares his world record of summiting Mt Kilimanjaro at the age of 5 with Serbia boy Ognjen Zivkovic, who scaled the peak on August 6, 2023. Teghbir is the youngest in Asia to achieve this milestone.
Teghbir attributed his success to his family and coach Bikramjit singh Ghuman.
His father Sukhinderdeep Singh, who accompanied him, said, “Teghbir started preparing for this almost a year ago.
Bikramjit Singh Ghuman helped him with the exercises related to cardiovascular health and increase in lung capacity to deal with altitude sickness. He used to go on weekly treks to different hilly locations. During the trek, he walked around 8-10 kms everyday and stayed in minus temperature for almost a week.”
His father, who works as an administrator in a hospital, said, “We stayed in temporary tents and took the Machame Route to reach the summit in 6 days. Due to bad weather and fierce snowstorm the summit push was cancelled and we had to return mid way. They reached the summit in their second attempt.”
It was very challenging for the entire crew, which comprised his father, two guides, and two supporting staff.
A gynecologist, Teghbir’s mother Dr Manpreet Kaur said, “He followed a very strict diet. They will now return on August 30.”
